Hiking to Makaleha Falls: Kauai’s Secret Jungle Waterfall
Makaleha Falls is a true Kauai gem, perfect for those seeking adventure and natural beauty off the beaten path. If you’re exploring the lush landscapes of Kauai and up for an adventure, Makaleha Falls should definitely be on your list. Tucked deep in the island’s lush jungle, this spot feels like a secret the island only shares if you’re willing to take the path less traveled.
The hike to Makaleha Falls is moderately challenging but incredibly rewarding. This 2.6 mile out and back will take you through a lot of tropical vegetation. You’ll be hiking across river streams, over and under trees and rocky paths. Every step builds anticipation until you hear it, the loud roar of the water crashing up ahead. Then, there it is: Makaleha Falls, a cascading waterfall framed by the jungle greenery. If you are lucky to get there early on a sunny day, you’ll find the sunlight shining on the whole waterfall.
Go for a swim in the pool below the falls or just sit and soak in nature upon your arrival.

Tips for Visiting Makaleha Falls:
- Timing: Mornings are ideal for cooler weather and fewer people. Because this is in a valley, the path gets dark early so give yourself extra time.
- Footwear: Wear sturdy shoes that you are willing to get wet, Tevas or Keens would be perfect for the adventure. The trail is rocky and can be slippery so regular water shoes for swimming may not be enough.
- Gear: We have hiked this with and without a hiking pole and a hiking pole is the way to go! You’ll want to have a hand available at times to hold on to rocks or trees as you pass under or over, but a single hiking pole or stick is the perfect companion for this hike.
- Safety: Be careful near the water, as the rocks can be slippery and the paths can be muddy.
