Hideaways Beach (Pali Ke Kua): Snorkeling Paradise in Princeville, Kauai

Tucked beneath the cliffs of Princeville on Kauai’s North Shore is one of the island’s most rewarding hidden gems: Hideaways Beach (also called Pali Ke Kua Beach). With its golden sand, turquoise water, and thriving reef just offshore, it offers some of the best snorkeling in Kauai, if you can get parking and are willing to brave the short adventurous trail down.

This guide covers everything you need to know: how to find the trailhead, what to expect on the hike, snorkeling conditions, the best season to visit, and a video walk through of our visit in August at the end.

How to Get to Hideaways Beach

Parking is challenging. The official public lot has only about 9–10 spaces and fills early, often before 8 a.m. Take advantage of your jetlag if you want to get a spot. Just before the gate for 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay (formerly St. Regis Princeville), you’ll see the small public parking lot on your right. If those are full, there’s pay parking at Makai Golf Course or you may need to circle back later.

Once parked, walk toward the Puʻu Poa Condominiums. Between the condos and 1 Hotel you’ll see the Kaumumene Trail, a steep, narrow footpath leading down to the beach.

The Trail: Short but Sketchy

The trail to Hideaways is short, like 0.15–0.25 miles, but it’s not the distance that’s the issue. This descent is part staircase, part rope-assisted mud slope clinging to the cliffside. I swear every year it seems to be more and more eroded. Pack light and wear appropriate footwear.

  • At the top, a metal staircase begins the drop. Some steps and railings are rusted or uneven.
  • The middle section requires holding onto ropes strung along trees and poles to steady yourself. Roots act as natural steps, but they can be slippery when wet. You’ll see the beach once you get down past the roped section.
  • The path zigzags down through dense greenery until it spits you out onto sand.

Pro tips for the trail:

  • Wear sturdy shoes (not flip-flops).
  • Pack light and bring a backpack to keep hands free.
  • Avoid the trail after heavy rain, it turns muddy and dangerous.

Think of it less as a walk and more as a mini adventure hike; one of the reasons Hideaways remains so secluded.

What to Expect on the Beach

At the bottom, you’re rewarded with a small crescent-shaped stretch of soft golden sand framed by dramatic green cliffs. Hideaways feels like a private cove, quiet and peaceful. It is small so the mornings are the quietest time to enjoy the beach.

The shade of kamani trees offers natural cover, making it a comfortable place to spend hours. But there are no lifeguards, no bathrooms, no services (and as of 2025, no cell service) here. Bring water, snacks, reef-safe sunscreen, and everything else you’ll need.

Snorkeling at Hideaways Beach

Hideaways is one of the best snorkeling spots on Kauai during calm summer months. The reef begins just offshore and you’ll see colorful fish, moray eels tucked between rocks, Hawaiian green sea turtles grazing along the reef and coming up for air. I would call this an intermediate snorkel site as there are no lifeguards. In the summer months, the water is clear, simply stay within your comfort limits.

Safety warning: In winter (November–March), North Shore surf is dangerously high. Strong rip currents make snorkeling and swimming unsafe. If the water looks rough, stay on the sand and enjoy the view. There are no lifeguards at this beach.

Best Season and Time to Visit

  • Summer (May–September): Calm seas, warm weather, and the clearest snorkeling conditions.
  • Winter (November–March): Big waves and dangerous currents. This becomes a spot for experienced surfers, not swimmers.
  • Year-round tip: Arrive early in the morning for parking and to enjoy the beach with fewer people.

Is going to Hideaways Beach worth it?

Hideaways combines everything travelers dream about on Kauai: adventure, seclusion, and pristine natural beauty. The sketchy trail and difficulty finding public parking, keeps some of the crowds away, while the reef delivers unforgettable snorkeling in the summer months. You’ll feel like you’re in your own private paradise on the beach.

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path Kauai beach, Hideaways should be at the top of your list.
